An unexpected ending...

Major spoiler alert!!!

If you have not seen The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey yet, don't watch this clip (published on YouTube by thapetrificustotalus).

This is the final scene for the dwarves, a scene that moved me to tears... all 4 times that I have seen the film on the silver screen. Even now, I have to remind myself to breathe when I watch this clip.

And as for Thorin: all I really want is to wrap one hand around the dark strands of his hair and snuggle up against his fur-lined frame. Strange, but I always imagine him to be taller than me (about Richard's size), so I would be able to rest my head on his shoulder... ;-)

And then, he would wrap both arms around me, and smile... just like he does in this clip...

Thirty Days to Thorin (1) - The Crush

As I type this, the last minute of 12 November 2012 is officially over. In exactly 30 days, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first film from a new trilogy by director Peter Jackson will officially be released in Belgium.

I'm good at countdowns, apparently, so here's another one. For the next 30 days, I will be writing about The Hobbit, the film(s), the book and especially about Thorin Oakenshield and Richard Armitage (of course!) every day. Join me in counting down to the moment that we have all been waiting for for so very long.

Before I start, let me just warn you that this countdown may contain spoilers about the original story by J.R.R. Tolkien and about the film(s). It's quite impossible to talk about both without giving away any details from the storyline. So, if you haven't read the story and don't want to know what happens before you see the film, please don't read any further.

Even though the title of J.R.R. Tolkien's story is The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, it could just as well have been called Thorin Oakenshield, the King Under the Mountain. It's Thorin Oakenshield who goes on a quest to reclaim Erebor, the kingdom in the Lonely Mountain and vanquish the dragon Smaug. He's the character that goes on a journey of redemption, to liberate his homeland and claim his heritage. He's the character in the story that goes on the most profound, life altering journey. To me, he's the real hero of the story (although I admit that my judgement may be slightly blurred by the fact that RA is portraying him.)

It's over 2 years ago now that I first learned that Richard Armitage was going to be playing the role of Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson's film(s). I was so very happy for him, but at the same time couldn't really wrap my head around the idea that this tall man (He's 6 foot 2 inches - and a half! - or 189.23cm) would be playing a 5'2" dwarf - that's about 157.5cm. How would this man, who was used to towering over people and having others look up at him, cope with being short? Wasn't PJ just complicating things too much? So many things to worry about! I'll write more in the coming days about how I slowly started to believe that this was actually a good decision.

The first thing that set my mind at ease was this picture of Richard as Thorin. I hate to admit it, but I've had a huge crush on this dwarf ever since! *blushes*

Question: Can you name all 13 dwarves that take Bilbo Baggins on this adventure? No cheating allowed!

Start practicing now and I'll see you tomorrow... :-)

A birthday countdown in pictures (#4)

This is day 4 of my countdown to 22 August. Can you believe that it's almost 1 year ago that we celebrated Richard Armitage's milestone 40th birthday? Phew, time flies!!

For some weekend fun, I would like to present a picture that I personally think is absolutely hilarious! I only discovered it today, but otherwise I would have added it to my previous post about Richard's height.

Here's Richard Armitage in the BBC's Robin Hood, episode 2 of season 2.

As always, a big THANK YOU to www.richardarmitagenet.com for the picture

Richard plays Sir Guy of Gisborne, the very tall, dark and handsome Black Knight.
Very tall indeed, 6'2.5'' to be exact. That's 189.25cm.
Next to him is Dexter Fletcher who played Count Friedrich in the episode 'Booby and the Beast'.
Dexter is 5'6'', that's 168cm.

The camera angle of this picture captures the difference perfectly and shows off Richard's incredible physical presence. That physical presence is exactly one of the reasons why I'm eagerly looking forward to The Hobbit: his regal elegance combined which a deep, velvet voice and brooding, sorrowful blue eyes will capture the attention of audiences all over the world. And from that moment on, they will love him just as much as we already do... well, maybe not quite as much ;-)

What's a birthday without a birthday present? But what do you get the man who's living his dream?
This year, consider donating to one of Richard's selected charities (Shelter, The Salvation Army, Childline and Barnardo's) - visit his
Just Giving page. Thank you!

Size does matter!

…Especially when you’re playing a dwarf, apparently.

In the below interview, Richard is asked how tall he is and he answers:
“I’m 6 feet 2inches…and a half”

Nothing out of the ordinary if it wasn’t the very first time that the ‘half an inch’ was mentioned (as far as I know, that is). Could it be that playing a 5’2” dwarf has made our favourite man more concious and even slightly anxious about his height?

For someone who’s not used to measuring things in feet and inches, it might seem silly to worry about only half an inch. But once you realise that it’s the equivalent of almost a centimeter and a half, you can see why it would be important.

I do seem to remember reading in a previous interview that they gave Richard extra high boots, just to make sure that he was taller than Graham McTavish who plays Dwalin. Of course, Thorin, The King Under The Mountain, has to be the tallest dwarf.

Don’t worry, dear Richard, size doesn’t matter, it’s what you do with it that’s important!

;-))

Just to make sure we all know what we're talking about:
0.5 inches = 1.27 cm
2.5 inches = 6.35 cm
6 feet = 182.88 cm
6 feet + 2.5 inches = 189.23 cm

6 feet + 2 inches = 182.88 + 5.08 = 187.96 cm
