Hey Ricky!

This is my first post in the Fandom chain of FanstRAvaganza 3 and the very last one on this blog for the week. I can't believe the week is almost coming to and end already!

Today, I wanted to talk about a picture of Richard Armitage as Ricky Deeming from an episode of George Gently. Here it is:

Richard Armitage as Ricky Deeming in George Gently
I know this was only a minor role for Richard, but I love this picture. It shows so many of the reasons why I love Richard, aside from his incredible talent and the fact that he's an intelligent and thoughtful man.

THE HAIR
Richard's haircut and facial hair are a constant subject for debate. I personally love him with short hair and his The Hobbit beard, but the hair and 5 o'clock shadow in this picture are simply irresistible!

THE EYES
I love the intensity in his eyes. It reminds me of one of my favourite characters: Lucas North in Spooks. And it's a great reminder of the intensity and dedication with which Richard Armitage takes on every single acting job, no matter how insignificant the role.
His beautiful blue eyes continue to mesmerise me!

LEATHER
Richard looks good in leather. Anyone who has ever seen him as Guy of Gisborne will surely agree with me. But that's not all. He looks good in black, and that just happens to be one of my favourite colours.

WHITE
The white scarf lights up his face and shows off his blue eyes. To me, it symbolises his kind and considerate character, his good heart. The best example of that kindness is the way he always finds the time to send little messages to his fans, showing his appreciation for our support, no matter how hectic and busy his life can get.

THE FACE
One of Richard's first experiences on stage was in The Hobbit. I can see why he played an elf: the mouth, the nose, the ears. I was initially very surprised that he was cast as Thorin Oakenshield, a dwarf, and I was worried that the face prosthetics that would be necessary for his transformation into a dwarf, would cover up this beautiful face. Imagine my relief when I finally got to see Thorin, but I could still see Richard underneath!

THE HANDS
Richard has beautiful hands with long fingers. This picture shows them off perfectly! The elegance and grace of a dancer...

ELEGANCE
The way Richard is photographed here, clearly shows his past experience as a dancer. It's a strong but elegant pose, his back is straight, his neck is long, but the shoulders are down. This is clearly a man who is very much aware of his own body, he knows exactly how to move his body to convey an emotion. I have some experience as a dancer myself, and it's so beautiful to see that elegance and grace in Richard.

There you have it. Although Ricky Deeming is not that important as a character, I adore this picture as a symbol for the talent that is Richard Armitage.

What's your favourite picture?

  1. Hi Inge,
Great choice of Ricky Deeming! I agree with you 100%. Though I've only seen clips of George Gently and RA's performance, it was riveting! Maybe RA should try another "wild ones" role in the future?
    Cheers! Grati ;->

  2. Inge, I love how you have analysed this beautiful picture. It is amazing how much can be conveyed in a single, frozen moment.

    1. Oh, it's a revelation to hear about his posture! I''ve always thought that he never came across as athletic, but rather, moved like a dancer. There's a scene in the first ep of Strike Back where John Porter manoevres down a short hall and kicks open a door. I can watch that scene over and over with how fluid he is and suggests power without a macho bone in his body. Hard to describe.

Thanks for the swooningly great description of his posture.

    2. @pi, I know exactly which scene in Strike Back you mean. That suggestion of great power and strength, without having to look like Sylvester Stallone, there are not many actors who can do that!

@memythoughtsandwhoknows A picture says more than a thousand words!

  3. Ricky is a perfect choice - and I really agree with you about that white scarf and the effect on his face and eyes. Of course the black leather! Love what you say about his awareness of his own body and the power of movement as a dancer, very interesting.

  4. Richard as Ricky was an interesting trip. His portrayal of the biker gang leader was probably what made it possible for him to play Guy. Yes, he looks good in leather and he does convey so much in his body movements and facial expressions. I'm sure glad I "met" him! Great article as always :-)

    1. That's what I thought, Jeannie: Ricky was a very good starting point for Richard to develop Guy. It's taking Ricky just a few steps further...

  9. You gave us some interesting insights on the character of Ricky Deeming. To me, the zippers represent a certain closed-up yet accessible personality.

    1. Great analysis of the zippers, B. I had never thought of it like that, but it fits perfectly!

  10. A small part, Ricky D is just a bit - iconic. Rebel. I always have thought that Armitage moves in a sort of graceful/awkward manner. A bit like some sort of deer species. Both Ricky and Guy have these moments.

    1. Yes, they both move in the same way - I wonder how much of that it part of the character created by Richard and how much is just Richard.
An iconic rebel - I love that description!

  11. Ricky commanded the screen! In the scene when he is on the beach it is obvious that his friends idolize him and they should. Swathed in black he is a commanding presence, full of power and animal magneticism (been wanting to use that word for a while.)

It is interesting to see how his character reacts to the fact that one of the group is 'in love' with him.

    Great post!

  12. Nice point about the eyes -- I always feel like Ricky has that piece hidden, but lets it out just every now and then to the best effect! Love this description. (I wish more F3 bloggers had chosen this option.)

  13. I have to admit that you have shown me that this picture is very much like West Side Story. I now looks like a dance number from a musical, a wonderful insight.

RA played Ricky in 2007, after at least one series of RH. That will be my first question for him, when we sit down to talk, how does he decide what small roles to play?

One of his best scenes in anything that he has acted is the one at the police station. I could watch that one over and over again.

    1. West Side Story...yes, I can see what you mean! If his singing in the trailer for The Hobbit is anything to go by, I'm sure he'd be a great choice for the leading role in a musical. It's such a shame that there is no conclusive evidence of him singing in Cats (only in group shots, never him singing alone)...
Great scene in the police station... actually, the more we talk about Ricky, the more I realise how many great moments there are in this episode.
      Thanks, Kathie!
