DO NOT READ THIS POST IF YOU'RE AVOIDING SPOILERS FOR THE NEXT HOBBIT MOVIE!!
So, everyone seems to be getting excited about a new poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Great! Let's have a look! I'm sure it's beautiful and majestic and fierce and wonderful and...wait - what!?
No no no, this poster is not good at all. Yes, it's a perfect design, as usual and the detail of Thorin's armour is impressive and all that. But what I really see is the Prince of Durin, the next King Under The Mountain, the rightful ruler of Erebor, overcome by the horrible disease that plagued his grandfather and that made Erebor an easy target for Smaug The Terrible.
All I see is dragon sickness.
And that is not good.
Because he's blue? What is it in his expression that makes you see Dragon sickness? His eyes? What? Just interested. Not challenging.
ReplyDeleteYes, his eyes. The zombie look, as if he's 'not really there'... If that makes sense? The blue probably makes the effect stronger. Not sure the designers wanted to portray dragon sickness here, but that's the first thing that came to my mind... Thanks for your comment! :-)
DeleteI thought Thorin looked like a zombie, too, with the color shading. Ha! But good insight you have there about the filmmakers possibly telegraphing Thorin’s dragon sickness.
ReplyDeleteAnd I will be crying buckets during the third film.
P.S. And Jane said, Thorin is one good looking zombie. Ha! I concur.
DeleteHe sure is one very good looking zombie! :-)
DeleteI don't really see the dragon sickness as having overtaken him here. Just that he is facing one more perilous situation and realizes the serious nature of it. And is determined to take it on! The blue does give it a somber tone . . . NOT THINKING ABOUT LAST FILM. Just ridin' down that river of denial for now . . . ;)
ReplyDeleteI think his face looks like a bird of prey, I can't shake the image since I saw the side profile close-up
